India - Assam

Assamese separatist groups.

Violent separatist insurgency in the northeastern state of Assam began in 1979, due to alleged alienation, impoverishment, and mistreatment of the indigenous people by the central government. The main rebel actor is the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA). Others include the Adivasi National Liberation Army, Karbi Longri N.C. Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF), and the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB).

On July 12th 2011, a unilateral ceasefire was declared by the pro-talk faction of ULFA, and on the 23rd, the group stated that it is not demanding sovereignty for Assam. Peace talks between New Delhi and the pro-talk ULFA faction, vying to be the legitimate ULFA voice, are to start in August. However, ULFA’s anti-talk faction, which continues to be firmly against negotiation with New Delhi, released a press statement on the 24th, encouraging natives to join the effort in preserving Assam’s sovereignty.
