Disputed region within geographic limits of Azerbaijan; ethnic majority is Armenian. Last major fighting was in 1994.

Summary

From 1988 to 1994, there was war between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabkh, a majority Armenian enclave within Azerbaijan. While active fighting ended in 1994, the de facto independent region is still claimed by Azerbaijan.
