The Naxalite movement began in the sixties, but has increased in scope and violence since 2002, and is now active in many Indian states, including Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.
