The United States assembled an international coalition to invade Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. By backing the Northern Alliance, the coalition was able to remove the Taliban from power very quickly. But the Taliban regrouped, and violence has been increasing since 2004. As coalition partners have reduced their involvement, the US has grown troop numbers.
