In early 2009, Andry Rajoelina, the mayor of Madagascar's capital Antananarivo, began agitating for the overthrow of the president, Marc Ravalomanana. Rajoelina's TV station had aired an interview with Didier Ratsiraka, the former president of the island nation, and in retaliation, Ravalomanana had shut the TV station.

Protests turned violent, and over 100 people were killed by the army. The army switched its support to Rajoelina in mid-February 2009, and Ravalomanana ceded power.
